大約30個國家的元首和高級官員在匈牙利參加了為紀念鐵幕瓦解20周年的紀念會。
匈牙利總統紹約姆﹒拉斯洛在國會的紀念會上說如今的挑戰是"一個團結的歐洲的價值觀是否能夠為人所承認"。
1989年6月27日，當時的匈牙利與奧地利兩國的外長剪斷了兩國邊界上的鐵絲網，象徵兩國不再存有邊界。
這被看成是"鐵幕上的第一道裂痕"，而隨後局勢迅速發展，最終導致了蘇聯及華沙公約集團的分崩瓦解。
實際上，在當年的5月2日，匈牙利方面就已經開始在拆除兩國邊界上的鐵絲網，僅留下了一段以便拍攝奧匈兩國外長的"歷史鏡頭"。
但是，奧匈廢除邊界，也吸引大批的東德民眾前往匈牙利，試圖經由奧匈兩國前往西德。
同年11月9日，分割東西德的柏林牆也被推倒。一年後，東西德正式統一。
德國總統克勒也在紀念會上向匈牙利人民表示感謝，他說當年是因為匈牙利人民的勇敢支持東德人民，東西德方能統一。
